I did not have enough time to get to Dutch and German painting but went through the entire Renaissance-Baroque section and it was quite amazing. Favorite Italian paintings from the Renaissance Period included;Massaccio's"Birth of Florentine Baby",Piero di Pollaioulo's"Annunciation",Raphael's"Virgin Maey with Christ Child and John the Baptist",Luca Signorelli's"Old Man",Ludovico Mazzolino's"12 Year Old Christ Teaching in Temple",Paris Bordone's"Chess Players",Titian's"Venus and Organ Player",and Parmigiano's"Baptism of Christ" Personal Baroque and 18th Century Italian favorites were;Bernardo Strozzi's"Salome with Head of John the Baptist"(marvelous Tenebrism),Caravaggio's"Victorious Cupid",Giovanni Pannini's"Duc de Chos Departs from Saint Peter's In Rome"(very punctilious painting),and Francesco Beccaruzzi's"Ballplayer With Page".

I had a wonderful pesto pasta there- with delicate fresh leaves of basil, and toasted pine nuts. You will see an astounding variety of works here- from Italy, the Low Countries, and everywhere else. A wonderful and not too crowded art museum. They also offer audio guide and lockers inside.
I had only a very limited time to visit the museum, so I had to restrict my visit only to the Netherlandish and German painting till the sixteenth century: the collection is very impressive. It's a treasure trove of European art, and has some great explanations of the history of Western art. Private Half-Day Walking Tour of Berlin's Kulturforum and the Gemäldgalerie with Art Historian. It's wonderful, in summer, to be a little cold in Berlin!
Otherwise, I would save your museumgoing energy for Museum Island.

On a pleasant November Tuesday,I spent a splendid day sedulously studying and enjoying the Gemaldegallerie's tip top collection of Old Master Italian paintings from the Gothic,Renaissance,Baroque,and 18th Century Periods.This is a very large collection of Old Master paintings,especially of paintings by Italian,German.Netherlandish.and Dutch Masters.Personal Italian favorites from the Gothic Period were;Deodato Orlandi's"Saint John the Baptist"(very Byzantine in style).Ugolino di Nerio's "Altarpiece",Giotto's"Dormition of Virgin",Taddeo Gaddi's"Saint Francis Bringing Child Back to Life",and Lorenzo Monaco's"Last Supper".All of these paintings employed egg tempera and gold leaf on wood panel.
