In the lowlands of the Elbe downstream of Lutherstadt Wittenberg, bottom sediments mainly consist of sand and sediment transport continuously occurs at all discharge levels. No such study has been performed to date. The five principal river basins, with an area of more than 5000 km2, are: Cagayan River basin in north Luzon (25 469 km2); Mindanao River basin in Mindanao island (23 169 km2); Agusan River basin in Mindanao island (10 921 km2); Pampanga River basin near Manila in Luzon island (9759 km2); and, Agno River basin in Luzon island (5952 km2), James H. Thorp, D. Christopher Rogers, in Field Guide to Freshwater Invertebrates of North America, 2011. Most carbon exports from TMSs are in the form of dissolved organic carbon (McDowell and Asbury, 1994; Chestnut et al., 1999; Lyons et al., 2002). These paleoflood records provide physical evidence of the largest floods, thus improving design discharge estimates for hazard studies and even for assessing sustainability of water resources in dryland environments where floods are an important source of water to alluvial aquifers (Benito et al., 2011a, b).
Ortho-phosphate–P and silicate–Si concentrations in downstream reaches may drop below 0.01 and 0.15 mg/L, respectively, and limit additional phytoplankton growth, while nitrate–N rarely falls below 1 mg/L (Figure 14.7) (data by ARGE-Elbe). The resulting intense rainfall typically generates Hortonian overland flow, even on vegetated and soil-covered hillslopes (Pearce and McKerchar, 1979; Garcia-Ruiz et al., 1996). However, post-hurricane exports are less than a few percentages of the hurricane-derived plant litter inputs, which reflects the tight nutrient retention these systems can have (Schaffer et al., 2000). Other researchers have fitted equations of the same general form directly to large data compilations using log-log regression analysis. Hence, the high primary productivity in the free-flowing section of the Elbe shows characteristic seasonal dynamics similar to lakes with a spring bloom, a clear water phase, and summer blooms (Figure 14.8). Their water quality is not influenced by freeze–thaw cycles, ice-induced bank erosion, or seasonal pulses of plant litter (although hurricane deforestation can create significant pulses). River morphology also contributes to the algal die-off because artificially deepened sections (16-m shipping depth) reduce light availability for algae and increase water residence times, particularly within and downstream of the port of Hamburg. Planktonic algae are thriving on the high nutrient levels in the river, except for the lowermost section.
