dresden vs leipzig
Where to Go, What to See, and How to do it. It is a bit tiring, but curiosity drives us. It’s a city I would come back to just to explore properly the 2nd time around.
I quite enjoyed Dresden, particularly for the museums, but have yet to visit Leipzig. Though we saw a lot of cranes and construction on this visit as well (I think they spend the off season restoring…). We enjoyed Vienna, but in our book it was just another big city and not somewhere we’d go again.
Its position on the River Elbe is beautiful. Sächische Schweiz has strange rock formations including flat topped "mesas", on one of which was built an imposing fortress, Königstein. It has been largely restored and today it has a magnificent and spacious Old Town on the banks of the Elbe river.
But it is lively with a mix of both locals and tourists.
It's a lovely city, totally reconstructed since the fire bombing in WWII.
I don’t need to see Dresden again. You’re very right about context. Thanks for the comment Patti. "...in either Dresden or Leipzig." Dresden has the two Green Vaults. I personally prefer Leipzig, but it depends on what you want.

Although we were only there 24 hours, I saw lots of local and international restaurants as well as some great cafés. We can appreciate both but with our lifestyle I’d say that we do appreciate a city to “live in” more than a place that has “amazing highlights”.
The Leipzig train station is really nice also, and the city is walkable and pleasant. Prior to that Dresden was called “the Florence on the Elbe” and was considered one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. It’s not a place where people live. Also, Dresden has the museum/house of Beethoven's contemporary. We stayed at the Aparthotels Münzgasse An der Frauenkirche on our 2nd trip and we recommend it highly. The nearby Unstrut valley offers wineyards too, but IMHO they are less beautiful than Dresdens. If you’re looking to see “sights” then Dresden is the place to go. For a short visit, both have plenty to see. My plan was actually Leipzig (because of Bach + my grandfather had studied mathematics there after WWI), but somebody told me that Dresden is more beautiful and worth visiting. Assuming two of your seven days are arrival and departure days, that leaves you five complete days in Berlin. They didn’t blow ours away. It’s a university town, which means young people and international students, both of which contribute to the great vibe. In my 7 days stay in (ta && ta.queueForLoad ? I could easily live there. The city is surrounded by wineyards, wine villages and castles. It’s a place we come back to regularly because we get everything done there. I have been visiting for fifteen years and still I continue to find new things to discover. Even if you don’t like classical music – and I’m not really a fan – the city’s association with composers such as Bach and Mendelssohn are fascinating. For me, a the trip to Leipzig is worth it for this museum alone. Which offers the most "bang for the buck" for a short visit?
Dresden is almost the opposite of Leipzig. On one side of the bridge are posh 19th century living quarters, on the other a wine village, villas and castles.
But there are exceptions (e.g., Paris). On our first stay we were at Maritim Hotel Dresden: also nice with competitive pricing. My wife and I want to spend a couple of days in late October in either Dresden or Leipzig.
The closest mountains are the Harz mountains, but AFAIK it takes more than 2 hours to get there. I passed through it in 1999 and it was just covered in cranes and construction. Dresden has more museums, but outside the relatively small reconstructed Neumarkt and Altmarkt areas (which feels much more "visited" than "lived in"), the city isn't particularly attractive. Ideally, you should visit both cities as they have much to offer, historically and culturally. I was “very” surprised by Vienna. Dresden offers a very small reconstructed old town with world-class architecture and world-class museums, surrounded by Commie architecture, surrounded by beautiful 19th century quarters. I'm not big on cities, but just east of Dresden, on the Elbe near the Czech border, is a German national park called Sächische Schweiz.

But I would second the notion that you should perhaps consider taking an extra day in (ta && ta.queueForLoad ? However, unlike Leipzig, Dresden feels like an artificial city. Sights in the surroundings aren't as diverse as Dresdens.... and they are less known. My wife and I start in “discovery mode” whenever we visit a new place. But architecture and museums aren't on Dresdens level, since Leipzig was a trading town, and merchants are stingy. thanks for helping keep our eyes and minds open.
Our friend Patricia however has a much more favourable opinion of Leipzig: “It definitely has the vibe of a city that is making a comeback. Museum, history and art can be found in both cities. I have to say though that I don’t agree with you about Prague because there is tons to see outside the very, very touristy center. Leipzig may have a longer classical music season, but both cities have important music institutions. So maybe I’m biased in my opinion. I agree, our stay is much too short for a city like (ta && ta.queueForLoad ? You can do day trips to Naumburg, Torgau, Dessau (Bauhaus), the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm (but late October is not the best time), Erfurt and Weimar. So... either city would be worth visiting in my opinion, but if you are looking for the eye-pleasing spectacle, go with Dresden. I don't think that (ta && ta.queueForLoad ? The centre has been meticulously reconstructed from the ruins of WWII. The answer might depend on what you are looking for. Dresden probably has slightly more art on the museum walls. There is also a nostalgic steam train and a fleet of paddle steamers. We were just back a few weeks ago and it was crazy. I wrote a post about it comparing it to Beyonce (you know, the soulless eyes…). Napoleon was defeated there and the monument commemorating that event, The Monument to the Battle of the Nations, is one of the most impressive I’ve ever seen. If you go a must-see is the Green Vault. Dresden offers towns plus great nature at Saxon Switzerland. There are lots of restaurants and cafes, it’s young and vibrant. This site uses Akismet to reduce spam. Leipzig is overall very attractive and very lively, and it vies with Berlin as the classical music capital of Germany. The old town is like a living museum. So I always appreciate when people write who want to see more than just sights.

And I’m in Split Croatia as I write this and I’m afraid we’re feeling the same way on a different level. Part 1: Cape Town, The biggest, most detailed FREE Travel Guide to South Africa. I also agree about Vienna which we found too sterile. Try to stay there if you can. There were only 5 of us in the group and our guide was a walking history book so she told us about everything our eyes couldn’t see. They have excellent public transportation and the main train station is itself a destination. But if you wan the whole time in one for history only, then Dresden is the choice, esp Dresden-Neustadt, where the biggest war museum is located., accessible by S-Bahn. I give a slight edge to Leipzig. I think what sealed the deal for us was the free walking tour we took.
